Rage

Huddled in the shadows

in the corner of my room,

my daughter and I hope

that you will calm down soon.

Listening in the darkness

for every hard foot fall,

she sobs in my shoulder

as we hide against the wall.

Tightly I clutch the stick

that I keep at my side.

I pray that I won't need to use it.

I pray that night will safely pass us by.

Praying in the shadows,

hoping in the gloom.

I comfort your scared sister

that this night won't be our doom.

But as the sun's rays peek

through the window shade,

a breath of relief settles across the house.

We have once again survived your rage.
