This tutorial is intended for a beginner to learn how to use brushes on a path in Photoshop.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

To do this tutorial you will also need Photoshop CS3 - CS4.  You may download a free trial at Adobe.

Remember to save as a .psd file often!

Download Heart Brush

1.  Open a new, transparent image, size 800 x 600 pixels.

2.  Choose the gradient tool

3.  Click on the gradient bar in tool bar at top to edit it.

4.  Set your gradient up as so, two colors on bottom -- light one on left, dark on right

5.  Set the gradient to radial (second choice)

6.  Fill the image with the gradient, by left-clicking on left side, and dragging mouse to other side then releasing the mouse.

7.  Choose the freehand lasso tool, set feather = 30 px

8.  Make a selection on the image (same layer)

9.  Choose the gradient tool, and fill the selection with the same gradient

10.  Repeat steps 8 & 9, making selections throughout the image.  You'll get something like this (not exactly, everyone's will be different!)

11.  Now let's load the brush you downloaded.  Click on the paintbrush tool.  Then in the paintbrush toolbar, click on the menu arrow (circled)

12.  Windows > Brushes.  In the Brush palette, click on the WORDS  Brush Tip Shape, set diameter to 19-20,  spacing to 216%

Set foreground color to same color as your background.

13.  Click on the WORDS  Shape Dynamics.  Set Size Jitter = 34%, Minimum diameter = 53%, Angle Jitter = 17%

14.  Click on the WORDS  Scattering.  Set Scatter = 139%, Count = 1

15.  Choose the Freeform Pen tool.  Set the pen to paths

16.  Draw a path curve down one side of the image.

17.  In the Layer Palette, click on the tab PATHS

18.  Right-click on the Work Path. Choose Stroke Path

19.  Right-click on the work path and choose Delete Path

20.  Choose the layer tab.  Apply any Layer Style you wish on the hearts or go into Blending Options (right-click on layer)  and apply some drop shadows, bevels, etc. of your choice.

21.  Repeat Steps 16 - 20 and create another path of hearts.

22. Make as many paths of hearts that you wish.

23.  Layers > Merge Visible.

24.  Save this as a JPEG.  File > Save As
